Abstract. The article discusses the possibility of using unpublished sources, in particular materials of police district administrations, in studying the socio-economic development of the post-reform provincial city. On the example of the district Kolomna of the Moscow province, it is shown that a comprehensive study of the city is impossible without referring to the materials of the fund of the Kolomensky district police department (F. 492) of the Central State Archive of Moscow. The vast majority of paperwork - reports, official messages, references, submissions, statements, formal request and other documents of county police officers - are first introduced into scientific circulation. It contains detailed information on the numerical, estate, religious composition of the urban population, on the state of industry, trade, crafts, as well as urban economy and improvement. It is noted that the statistical information of the local police, in particular, on the demographic composition of the urban population, as well as urban industry, differs from the official statistical indicators. As a result, the uncritical use of materials from the county police department is fraught with errors and involves correlation with other sources.
Keywords: local history, Moscow province, archival sources, a provincial city, social and economic development, Kolomna district police officer, police department.
