Abstract. Based on the first documents introduced into scientific circulation, extracted from the archives of Russia (RGIA, TsGA of Moscow, RAS, etc.) and Kazakhstan (archive of the Burabay district of Akmola region), as well as memoirs, scientific literature, and biographies, the article considers family members of the inspector and teacher of the Kolomna men's gymnasium I.M.Sedlak against the background of the historical events happened from the mid-1870s to the middle of the 1970s in the Russian Empire and Soviet Russia. On the example of the fate of the Sedlak family, the paper shows public positions, worldview, social behavior, and the personal fate of two generations of provincial intellectuals, which, to the best of their ability, influenced the development of education and science and socio-political processes in the Russian periphery.
