Abstract. The article analyzes the repertory of symbolic meanings of the Sun and the Moon (crescent) in the Russian and Bulgarian cultures of language. As a result of analysis of the traditional texts of different genres (folk songs, spells, carols, riddles) as well as proverbs, sayings and phraseological units of the Russian and Bulgarian languages containing the components of солнце (солнышко) / слънце and луна (месяц) / месечина the authors give the classification of the designated symbols. The sun symbolizes the source of life, the bliss, the godliness (with the overcome of Christianity – Jesus Christ); the flow of time; regal (princely) highness; happiness, luck; immutability of the world order; intensity, flamboyancy, novelty of someone or something; the moon (the crescent) – other, alien, upside down or beyond the grave world, in which the demon characters are activated; variability, yearning of soul.
Keywords: sun, moon, crescent, symbolic interpretation, culture verbal text, the Russian language, the Bulgarian language.
