Abstract. The article considers the features that can be used to distinguish between a quasi-symbol and related units, in particular, a metaphor, comparison, image, and cultural sign. When determining differential features, it should first be taken into account that these units refer to different semiotic systems: a quasi-symbol refers to a cultural system; a metaphor or a comparison does to a language system. Belonging to different systems determines the semantics and functions of these units. A quasi-symbol expresses ideas, has an imperative component of meaning, and regulates the behavior of the interpreter. A metaphor denotes phenomena of reality, acts as a means of cognition of reality. A quasi-symbol, like other elements of culture, is generalized by the concept of a sign of culture. The figurative component is distinguished both in the meaning of a quasi-symbol and in the meaning of a metaphor, but it plays a different role in the structure of the sememes of these units.
Keywords: cultural sign, quasi-symbol, metaphor, comparison, image.
