Abstract. The article is devoted to Leonid Romanovich Gorlanov (1939 – 2005), an outstanding Russian researcher, who passed away not long ago. He is the largest specialist in the field of agrarian history of Russia, including the history of the specific peasantry of the late 18th – first half of the 19th century. The article mainly analyses his main work "The Russian Appanage Peasants of 1797 – 1865" published in Smolensk in 1986 as a textbook and representing a quintessence of his ideas on legal and property status of this category of the Russian peasantry in the pre-reform period. The article also notes Gorlanov's enormous achievements in the actual study of this category of the peasantry and certain contradictions in his concept, especially associated with following the generally accepted provisions of the time when considering the situation with the oppressed strata of the Russian Empire of the pre-revolutionary period in general. The most fundamental position of the historian was to classify this category of rural population as an owner-occupied village, with all the conclusions and provisions that followed, which he convincingly argued in his study. It is precisely these theses that some contemporary authors are now trying to refute, but their statements about the actual equation of the appanage peasants with the state peasants cannot be accepted, as well as the direct falsifications of the government decree of 12 December 1801 on the right of nonnobility, other than landed peasants, to purchase uninhabited land. Critical assessments by the author of the article of a number of Gorlanov's provisions, for example, about the meager importance of the local self-government system in a specific village due to its constant violations by government agencies, do not change the general very positive opinion about his scientific work, the meaning of his "figures" in numerous tables and conclusions for modern researchers of this problem.
