Abstract. The purpose of the article is to analyze the features of the burials of the Old Believers of
the Tula region. To achieve this goal, it was necessary to undertake a number of tasks. The first task is
to study the legal framework. The conclusion about the regulation of the funeral process of Old Believers
as a result of studying the regulatory framework is as follows: there was no question of any burial system in the 19th century. The second task is to determine the significance of the cemetery for Old Believers in comparison with other religious infrastructure. The author concludes that cemeteries, as a religious and infrastructural unit, were more protected from persecution by the authorities, compared with
prayer rooms and houses, chapels and temples. The third task is to establish the attitude of local authorities to Old Believers' burials. It can be said that the representatives of the secular authorities were indifferent to the Old Believers' burials, they were more interested in compliance with sanitary standards.
Representatives of the spiritual authorities, on the contrary, treated the Old Believers' burials with caution, seeing them as "division propaganda" tool. The fourth task is to identify the forms of creation of
Old Believer cemeteries. Based on available sources, it can be said that legal cemeteries were created in
a permissive manner, but in some cases a turnout form was allowed. However, there were also illegal
burials, represented either by unauthorized burials, or in the form of the organization of entire cemeteries. The fifth task is to establish the number of burial sites for Old Believers. Based on the available
sources, we can only say that there were at least 17 burial sites represented in 15 settlements.
Keywords: cemeteries, burials, churchyards, Old Believers, Tula Region, secular power, spiritual power, infrastructure.
