Abstract. The purpose of the article is a linguopoetic analysis of the lexical means of expression presented in the novel "The Sun of the Dead" by I. S. Shmelev. The method of analysis is an integration of techniques of linguistic and literary criticism of a fiction text and implies the use of semantic, metasemiotic and metametasemiotic methods of studying the text. This analysis allows us to put forward and confirm in the course of the study the hypothesis about the special role of the tropes system in the ideological, semantic and structural organization of the novel, as well as to determine the most significant expressive units for the expression of the author's intention, taking into account both their frequency and meaning. The analysis reveals the following means of imagery characteristic of the author's style: oxymoron, metaphors, comparisons, epithets, hyperbole and metonymy. The author also points out their role in the text. The oxymoron in the novel title determines the general course of the narrative, built on the contradiction and opposition of images, heroes, landscape sketches, etc. Metaphorical transference in the novel is of key importance: zoomorphic, anthropomorphic and mortal metaphors allow the author to reveal the leading motives of the work ‒ the destruction of the world, the opposition of the living and the dead in the direct and figurative meaning of these concepts. I. S. Shmelev often uses detailed metaphors united by common symbolic images, which allows us to talk about the role of metaphor in the organization of the work composition. Comparisons and personifications complement metaphorical meanings. In the use of epithets the author also notes the juxtaposition of adjectives-coloratives and units with the sema ‘dead’ ‒ this is how I. S. Shmelev structures the chronotopos of the work.
Keywords: linguopoetic analysis, metaphor, comparison, oxymoron, epithet.
