Abstract. The purpose of the article is to study the peculiarities of the diplomacy of the Kazakh Khan Tauke (1630 – 1715) in relation to the Kalmyks and the Dzungarian Khanate. The authors analyze the historical period of time starting from the end of the 16th century, when Yesim, the grandfather of the future all-Kazakh khan Tauke, becomes the Kazakh khan, and ending with the beginning of the 18th century. It was a difficult time for the Kazakh Khanate and its tribal unions and ambiguous in terms of relations with the Kalmyks and Dzungars. Based on the analysis of information gleaned from archival sources (diplomatic correspondence, letters, reports, etc.) the authors make an attempt to generalize the data on the problem of the study. As a result, the article concludes that Khan Tauke made his own adjustments to the Kazakh-Kalmyk question, but at the same time, he relied on the tradition established by his predecessors. The main engine for Khan Tauke’s diplomacy was the concern to protect his territories, to preserve the independence and integrity of the Kazakh Khanate from external enemies who claimed the traditional territories of Kazakh nomads, trade centers, and caravan routes. In the course of the study, the authors introduce valuable archival documents, historical and literary monuments (diplomas, letters, legends, etc.), as well as historical and ethnographic materials of Kazakhstani and foreign researchers for scientific use. Therefore, the scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that it summarizes and analyzes not only new materials, but also the data available to the modern researcher concerning the content and orientation of the diplomatic model of Khan Tauke, which he consistently applied to the Kalmyk and Dzungarian rulers.
