Abstract. The paper is a review of a collective monograph prepared by the staff of the RAS Center
for Humanitarian Problems of the Barents Region of the Kola Science Center, the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and
the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local History. The study highlights the processes of the resident
population formation on the Kola Peninsula in the difficult interwar period. The review summarizes
the contents of the five chapters. The objects of study in these chapters are various social and professional groups that played a significant role in the scientific and industrial development of the Kola
North and influenced the formation of the historical and cultural specifics of the region. The distinctive
characteristics of the peer-reviewed monograph are the comprehensive developing of the theme, the
extensive source base with a focus on unique archival materials and hard-to-find published sources,
attention to both macro- and microhistorical subjects, emphasis on the processes of identity formation
of the inhabitants of the northern territories, as well as the construction of the Kola North image and
the regional history.
Keywords: Kola North, 1920 – 1930s, social groups, socio-cultural dynamics, industrialization, frontier, identity.
