Abstract. The article is devoted to the urbanization of Altai, Tuva, and Khakassia. The purpose of
the publication is to trace the dynamics of urban improvement in these national autonomies in the period from 1945 to 2020. To do this, the data of official statistics, as well as the author’s research materials collected during the study in 2020, are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the specifics of urban
improvement in the region, which is conditioned by the late nature of urbanization, geographical location, the level of development of engineering and transport infrastructure, and the principles of financing this area.
It is shown that the tasks of urban improvement in Siberia have become a special concern of the
government only since the middle of the 20th century. Taking into account a large lag in the improvement of urban streets of Siberian cities from the average Russian indicators, local administrations
needed to develop a whole range of mechanisms aimed at reducing this gap. The article considers the
issues of external landscaping of streets, which was formed due to asphalting of roads, design of sidewalks, squares and other public areas, their landscaping and artificial lighting, creation of a system of
sanitary cleaning of settlements, and drainage structures. Besides, special attention is paid to the problems of public transport development and a complex of environmental problems, without solving
which it is impossible to form a modern comfortable urban environment.
It is possible to distinguish two main stages in the improvement of the cities in the region: Soviet
and post-Soviet. The first stage is characterized by the predominance of directive forms of urban development, with a significant degree of urban population engagement in the improvement of settlements. In contrast, the second stage is distinguished by the emergence of diverse non-state forms of
organizations, which are involved in various aspects of urban development. The role of municipal and
national authorities in this process is undergoing a decline, yet they continue to play a dominant role
as the primary power structures.
Keywords: urbanization, city, infrastructure, Altai, Tuva, Khakassia, landscaping, lighting, public transport, road paving, sanitary cleaning of urban settlements, urban ecology.
