Abstract. The article deals with the analysis of changes in researcher’s views on the nature of
Siberia's annexation to Russia from the XVIII century to the present. The author draws attention to the fact
that historiographical assessments changed not only depending on the sources used, but also on the time
of writing, since they were often determined by the ideological attitudes that dominated in a particular
period of the country's development. Pre-revolutionary historians tended to interpret the entry of Siberia
into Russia as a conquest. The concept of "Siberian capture" is most fully reflected in the works of P. I. Nebolsin, P. A. Slovtsova, M. N. Yadrintseva, P. N. Bucinskogo. In Soviet historiography, the concept of
joining Siberia to Russia was developed, originating in the works of S. V. Bakhrushin. The attention of
historians was focused on the peaceful colonization of the territory. The works of V. I. Shunkov,
L. M. Goryushkin, and N. I. Nikitin are written in this way. In the 1990s, many issues of Siberian history were
revised. Thus, V. A. Turaev drew attention to the numerous military clashes between Russian pioneers and
aboriginal tribes. Russian Russian resistance in Chukotka and Kamchatka was described by Zuev as
aboriginal wars. V. V. Trepavlov drew attention to the different motivations for the adoption of Russian
citizenship by Siberian peoples. According to E. V. Vershinin, many peoples of Siberia had no reasons for
voluntary submission to the Russian state, and the degree and duration of resistance depended on the level
of social development, military Affairs and armament of specific tribes. The article draws attention to the
fact that the process of including territories East of the Urals in the Russian state was complex,
contradictory and multidimensional.
Keywords: historiography, Siberia, annexation, incorporation, voluntary joining.
