Abstract. The article examines the problems of lexicographic nominations of honey as a product of nectar processing by honey bees and as an intoxicating drink depending on the method of preparation in A. N. Karpov's dictionary in comparison with other Russian language explanatory dictionaries. The author substantiates the relevance of considering the nomination ‘honey’ by the fact that today here are almost no linguistic studies on this topic. In addition, this lexeme belongs to the category of symbolic ones in Russian linguoculture. The author notes that the Beekeeping Dictionary by A. N. Karpov (1997), which is part of a series of explanatory dictionaries on the main science and production branches, is very informative and represents a rich source for the linguistic description of the Russian language vocabulary. The study establishes that in the dictionary by A. N. Karpov the word ‘honey’ has two meanings. The author focuses on the analysis of the lexeme ‘honey’ in the meaning of ‘intoxicating drink’. Karpov's dictionary records only three of the nominations noted in the Dictionary of Russian Folk Dialects: voronok, knyazhiy myod, and sychevka. At the same time, the Beekeeping Dictionary contains nominations that are absent from other dictionaries, for example, mod raskhozhiy, mod slastnyy, mod staryy, mod stolovyy, etc. The author establishes that some nominations of honey as an alcoholic beverage have different meanings in A. N. Karpov's dictionary and in other explanatory dictionaries of the Russian language. Thus, voronok, the nominee of honey, has the same ‘without adding hops’ in A. N. Karpov's dictionary, and ‘with adding hops’ in the Dictionary of Russian Folk Dialects. The article analyzes similar examples of discrepancies in meanings, presence and absence of nominees, and provides cultural and etymological comments on some linguistic phenomena. Based on the analysis of A. N. Karpov's Beekeeping Dictionary, the author determines that the lexicon of the thematic group ‘honey as a intoxicating drink’ remains dialectal in its form (voronok, rychevka) or represents the names of disappeared or out of use items (princely honey, sour honey, bottled honey).
Keywords: nomination, lexeme, explanatory dictionary, honey, intoxicating drink.
