Abstract. The article examines the problem of the variability of the annotation genre and identifies
the role of the content ideological component in the annotation variants functioning in the late Soviet
and modern publishing discourse. The material for the analysis was 100 book annotations to the Russian literature works of the 20th century, included in the socialist realism canon (“Mother” by Maxim
Gorky, “Virgin Soil Upturned” by M. A. Sholokhov, “How the Steel Was Tempered” by N. A. Ostrovsky,
“The Young Guard” by A. A. Fadeyev, etc.). The author uses general scientific methods (analysis, comparison, generalization) and methods of discursive and linguistic-pragmatic analysis. According to the
results obtained, annotation as a genre of publishing discourse has significantly changed in its compositional and content structure under the influence of the social values transformation. Thus, the Soviet
book annotations to literary publications contain minimal information about the authors; they give a
generalized description of the work, which mainly reveals its ideological orientation, rather than the
event content. The abundance of ideological clichés limits the linguistic diversity and originality of the
annotations text, which eventually become one of the tools for shaping the ideological worldview. In
turn, modern publisher’s annotations demonstrate flexibility in their approaches to characterizing
works of Soviet literature: the emphasis in them shifts from an ideological assessment to a broader
context, including biographical information about the authors, storylines, and psychological properties
of the characters. This contributes to the formation of reader's interest and emotional response and
ensures the fulfilment of the influencing function. In general, the study shows that the variability of
annotations in publishing discourse is due not only to transformations in the book industry, but also to
the change in the ideological context.
Keywords: annotation, genre, publishing discourse, genre variability, ideological component, ideological assessment.
