Abstract. The article focuses on the religious life of the population of the Northern Black Sea region
in the first centuries of our era, their attitude to death and posthumous life. In the first centuries of our era,
the ideas associated with the immortality of the soul and the expectation of a much better fate after death
are reinforced throughout the Northern Black Sea Region. Ancient mythology acquires new specific
features, which are expressed in the images of the old gods, who are endowed with new sacred functions.
Preservation of the basic functions of these gods as well as the spread of the cult of ancestors in the first
centuries is based on the general strengthening of chthonism and soteric functions in the sacred life of the ancient population. In this article, the author highlighted the special features typical for the population of
ancient cities of the Northern Black Sea Region in the first centuries of our era and relating to ideas about
“other worlds” and “other world patrons” in the context of the worship of ancestors.
Keywords: other worlds, otherworldly patrons, Northern Black Sea region, cult, cult of ancestors, chtonism.
