Abstract. Given the growing interest in philology in the study of the peculiarities of the functioning
of the language within the framework of the anthropocentric paradigm which implies the study of the
human mind, thinking and mental processes that are associated with them, the author considered it
expedient to devote the article to the analysis of the lexical means of representing the narrator's mental activity in the work of L. N. Tolstoy "The Snowstorm". The key image of the narrator in the story is recreated
mainly through verbal lexemes with the meaning of mental activity, as well as through dialogues with the
main characters in which he takes an active part by including his remarks using speech verbs. The mental
activity of the narrator is lexically heterogeneous and is represented mainly by verbs with the meaning of
memory, knowledge and thinking. Thus, in the course of the analysis, the author of the article concludes
that the representative structure of the concept of "mental activity" is implemented mainly by lexical and
semantic means among which it is logical to include verbs with the meaning of intellectual and speech
activity. The narrator's mental activity acts as a means of expressing his attitude to the world, as well as
an important component of the characteristics of his linguistic personality.
According to the author of the article, the linguistic analysis of the narrator's mental activity as a
component of his linguistic personality makes it possible to reveal the complex of characteristics that make
up his worldview and an assessment of the events taking place.
Focusing on the functioning of conceptual lexemes which are significant components of the
narrator's linguistic picture of the world the author draws conclusions about the individual originality of
his mental activity based on the material of a specific story of the writer "The Snowstorm".
Keywords: L. N. Tolstoy, "The Snowstorm", concept "mental activity", representation, lexical means, speech verbs, attitude, linguistic personality.
