Abstract. The object of the research is foreign culture toponyms, ethnonyms and their derivatives,
as well as phraseological units containing such components and reflecting notions of China, Chinese
people and realities in the Russian linguistic picture of the world. The authors consider the analyzed
units, mark out standards, stereotypes and symbols among them and correlate them with linguocultural
codes. Analysis of more than thirty lexical and phraseological units shows that there are two main ethnostereotypes in the Russian world picture, which reflect Russian people’s notions of China and the Chinese: (1) intensively expressed – complicated, incomprehensible, strange, etc. (kitayskaya gramota,
kitayskiye tseremonii, posledneye kitayskoye preduprezhdeniye, utro kitayskogo pchelovoda, etc.); (2) bad,
of poor quality (shankhai, noski Shaolinya, dyadyushka Lao, etc.). In Russian linguoculture, these units
can not only be stereotypes, but also have a reference (kak sto kitaytsev, kak do Pekina rakom, kak do
kitayskoy Paskhi, etc.) or symbolic meaning (kitayskiy bolvanchik, kitayskiye teni, kitayskaya gramota) at
the same time.
Keywords: foreign culture toponym, ethnonym, phraseological unit, ethnostereotype, stereotype, reference, symbol, China, Chinese.
