Abstract. The article deals with phraseologi-cal units having a communicative and pragmatic goal for creating a comic effect. The author finds out that the connotations determine the implementation and impact of phraseological jokes. A phraseological unit can cause both a smile and a latent ridicule of the addressee. The power of ridicule has varying degrees of intensity. The article discusses various structural types of humorous phraseological units built, in a similar manner, on the semantic opposition of two parts.
