Аннотация. В статье рассматриваются действия армии македонского царя Филиппа II и войск антимакедонской коалиции в Средней Греции в период, непосредственно предшествующий битве при Херонее 338 г. до н. э. Указывается, что воен-ная активность началась осенью 339 г. до н. э., когда в рамках развернувшейся ранее IV Священной войны Филипп осуществил вторжение в регион и неожиданно захватил обладавший большой стратегической значимостью город Элатея. Ответом стало быстрое выдвижение афинского войска в Беотию и формирование афино-фиванской коалиции, к которой чуть позже присоединились и некоторые иные полисы. Эллинские силы заняли две оборонительные пози-ции, разделенные горой Парнас. Первая располагалась у Амфиссы в Гравийском горном проходе, где разместились 10 тысяч наемников во главе с Харесом и Проксеном. Гражданское ополчение греческих полисов заняло удобную для защиты местность на берегах реки Кефисс у Парапотамий. Эта оборонительная стратегия соответствовала установкам греческой методики ведения войн IV в. до н. э. и учитывала более ранний опыт противостояния Филиппу. Зимой 339 – 338 гг. до н. э. масштабных боевых действий, предположительно, не было. В рамках весенне-летней кампании Филипп сумел благодаря дезинформации осуществить неожиданную атаку и очистить Гравийский проход, разгромив десятитысячный корпус греческих наемников. Указывается, что это вынудило гражданское ополчение антимакедонского союза покинуть прежние позиции у Парапотамий, а Филипп получил возможность встретиться с уже несколько ослабленными греческими силами в более выгодных условиях у Херонеи.
