Аннотация. В статье рассматриваются широко распространенные в науке представления о
катастрофических потерях армии Александра Македонского в пустынных районах Гедросии
летом-осенью 325 г. до н.э., вызванных проблемами в снабжении войска провиантом и пресной
водой. Выводы подобного рода базируются на сообщении Плутарха о спасении лишь одной
четвертой части армии, до того насчитывавшей 120 тысяч пеших и 15 тысяч конных воинов, а
также на пространных описаниях трудностей перехода, восходящих к утраченному сочинению
Неарха. Определяется, что первоначальным источником информации Плутарха о доле потерь
македонского войска, видимо, являлось сочинение Клитарха, склонного к вымыслу и драматизации повествования. Указанная Плутархом численность сил, вместе с Александром отправившихся в Гедросию, должна быть оценена как сильно завышенная. Рассказ о лишениях македонского войска, оставленный лично не участвовавшим в сухопутном переходе флотоводцем
Неархом, в значительной степени утрирован из-за его опоры на впечатления рядовых воинов,
литературных установок и политических мотивов самого автора. Выводы о многотысячных
потерях армии Александра в гедросской пустыне противоречат данным о численности войска,
собравшегося в 324 г. до н.э. в Описе, а также сообщениям о причинах вспыхнувшего тогда бунта и характере претензий солдатской массы. Предполагается, что в действительности македонский царь совершил марш через Гедросию с армией, включавшей в себя не более 30 тысяч воинов и нонкомбатантов. Трудности, возникшие в период перехода, были вызваны
недостаточным учетом специфики пустынных земель современного Макрана, необычно поздним началом муссонных дождей, незнанием особенностей местных водных ресурсов. Личный
состав войска, видимо, был не столько обескровлен потерями, сколько деморализован, в то
время как наибольшее количество жертв было среди нонкомбатантов.
