Abstract. The article is an attempt to address some of the lexical features of the headlines selected from regional newspapers during the Great Patriotic War. According to the author, consideration of the specifics of the wartime newspaper text is very relevant today due to a number of objective reasons, such as the preservation of the memory of the heroic and extremely difficult days of the war, the importance of studying such publications in connection with some features of the tense political situation of our days, the need to constantly improve the skills of modern journalists. When considering the headlines of the regional press of the war period, we mainly turned to two groups of lexical units: some nouns included in the thematic group of the military vocabulary, and words expressing an assessment. The authors' use of linguistic units that belong to the thematic group of military vocabulary in the titles allows the reader, at the stage of familiarity with the title of the published material, to imagine the content of the article or note accurately enough and to correlate it with the real reality. The inclusion of words with evaluative semantics in the headings is more able to express the attitude of the author to a number of events and facts, to form a similar attitude among readers. Of course, the groups of words under consideration are only a part of the huge language material found on the pages of regional wartime newspapers that can attract the researchers’ attention. The observations and their results can be useful to modern journalists to a certain extent.
Keywords: regional newspaper, headline, vocabulary, thematic group, assessment semantics, direct nomination, secondary nomination.
