Abstract. The paper develops the postulate about the reflection of the features of the cultural code in the dialect word. The language is a part of the national identity, and the dialect speech reflects the dialect language picture of the world. Dialectisms represent the aspects of the everyday life of people living in a certain territory, their spiritual values and historical events that happened on that territory. The article deals with the issue of understanding of dialectisms denoting human qualities by modern residents of the Tula region. The work compares the meanings of lexemes recorded in the Dictionary of Russian folk dialects (Slovar' russkikh narodnykh govorov) and existing in the territory of the dialect. In the course of the study, an experiment was conducted, the results of which are presented in the work. The author used the dialectisms recorded on the territory of the Arsenyevsky district of the Tula region. It turned out that the understanding of dialectisms by modern people depends on such factors as age, level of education and place of residence. For example, schoolchildren performed worse on the task than adults. In this case, the role of developed reading skills, linguistic flair, the volume of vocabulary and everyday experience is important. The level of education was paid special. It turned out that people who received a secondary education were less likely to make mistakes than those with a higher education. One can assume that the former are more focused on practical activities, more often hear vernacular and colloquial speech, which is not strange for them. Finally, the place of residence influences the understanding of a dialect. City dwellers made mistakes more often than the inhabitants of the periphery did. It is obvious that the dialects are preserved in the territories located far from the center. People who live in large, small villages and in small towns hear dialectisms more often.
Keywords: dialecticism, semantics, culture, dialectal language picture of the world, sociolinguistics.
