Abstract. The article discusses the features of M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin's journalism in the aspect of
the for-mation of reading competencies in high school students. The author provides the definition of
the no-tion of reading competencies, taken as the basis of the study. The article justifies the choice of
M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin's journalism, which is an example of Russian classical journalism of the 19th
century. The work provides historical, literary and linguistic comments to the fragment of the article,
thanks to which an unprepared reader is able to understand the text.
The historical commentary consists of the information about the time of the work’s creation, biographical data about the personalities mentioned in the text. Moreover, the information is presented
only to the extent necessary for the correct understanding and interpretation.
The essence of the literary commentary is to provide the information on the concepts related to the
literary process, the genre of the work, as well as the terms that characterize the unique contribution of
the writer to the national literature.
The language commentary includes the analysis of the linguistic and stylistic features of the work
and represents the deepest level of penetration into the literary work. The article pays particular attention to the specific techniques of the Aesopian language that are present in the analyzed extract: satirical images, irony and sarcasm, hyperbole, allusions – and many of them are compared with the phenomena of modern culture. Moreover, the process of “entering” a journalistic text is done in the framework of shaping readers' competencies: the necessary methods and techniques of working with the primary text are shown, which can be transferred to other journalistic works. The proposed con-sideration
proves that journalistic texts have a great potential for the formation of readers’ competencies.
Keywords: journalism, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Aesopian language, satire, sarcasm, allusion, readers’ competencies.
