Abstract. Today, one of the most important strategic issues in language education is the question of
the text and its educational and upbringing capabilities. The article examines the problems of perception
and interpretation of a journalistic text by a young reader, as well as the role and place of the classical
journalistic text in the modern educational paradigm. The text, including those related to journalism,
allows readers to successfully form important philological competencies, influences the worldview and
aesthetic views of the perceiving subject, their moral and ethical ideas, contributes to the replenishment
of the emotional repertoire of students. The publicistic texts, the authors of which are classic writers,
whose authority is obvious to the reader, should be recognized as the most significant ones for the young
reader. This is important because in such a text the personality of the author is extremely significant
that is manifested openly in the direct expression of their own position, including thanks to the evaluative vocabulary and syntactic features of the text. However, a modern young person cannot adequately
perceive a classical journalistic text created in the last or the century before last, since he needs a detailed linguistic and cultural commentary, due to which the perception of the text will cease to be difficult. The basic commentary to such a publicistic work should contain a detailed explanation of all proper
names (names of people, geographical names, names of holidays, works of art, etc.), archaic vocabulary,
special words and terms. On the example of the article by A. P. Chekhov, dedicated to N. M. Przhevalsky,
analyzed the desired amount of linguoculturological commenting on the text when preparing it for work
in the senior classes of secondary schools.
