Abstract. The article presents the results of a sociolinguistic study conducted to identify the variation of the formulary and linguistic elements in petitions of the 17th century due to social factors (the place where the petition was compiled, the petitioner's belonging to a certain social group). To achieve this goal, the following tasks are solved: 1) to analyze the composition of the props and the structure of the petition form dated the 17th century; 2) to trace the variations of the formulary and linguistic elements of the petitions of the 17th century on the territory of the Moscow state of the 17th century; 3) to trace the variations of the formulary and linguistic elements of the petitions of the 17th century, depending on the social status of the petitioner. The hypothesis of the study consisted in the assumption that in the 17th century uniform rules of office work were in effect on the territory of the entire Moscow state, therefore, the forms of documents should be uniform, but it was possible to vary the form elements of petitions of the 17th century due to other social factors. The study has been conducted on the material of 789 texts of petitions dated back to the 17th century. The author has analyzed the composition of the props and the form of the petitions, as well as the vocabulary and phraseology of the linguistic structure of the petitions of the 17th century; set phrases and formulas used from act to act have been identified and become permanent structural elements of the petitions. An attempt has been made to identify the variation of formulary and linguistic elements due to the territorial feature (the place where petitions were made) and the petitioner's belonging to a certain social group of the Moscow state of the 17th century. The study has been carried out within the framework of the anthropocentric paradigm which focuses on the person – the author of the petition. The texts of petitions are considered from the standpoint of sociolinguistics, historical stylistics, documentary studies and documentary linguistics. The results of the research can be used in compiling additional courses and seminars on sociolinguistics, communication theory, historical stylistics, documentary linguistics, documentary studies and linguistic source studies.
Keywords: business writing of the 17th century, petition, document, form, set phrases, formulas, lexical and phraseological means.
